The National Forest is one of Britain's boldest environmental projects: the creation of a new forest across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, linking the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood. Over the past 25 years the National Forest have created a woodland economy and a beautiful landscape for everyone to enjoy. It really is a world class unique venture and home to the award winning Timber Festival. The National Forest is a true best practice example of what is possible in relation to the future of forestry and the needs of the communities they serve.

With a history of coal mining and heavy industry, the landscape is now that of rolling farmland, ancient forests and new-planted woodlands. Its main towns and villages include Burton upon Trent (famous for its brewing), Coalville and Swadlincote.
